Press Release: Indigenous People

Monday, 09 August 2010 Last Updated ( Thursday, 12 August 2010 )

ENIL –The European Network on Independent Livingrespects the International Day of the World's Indigenous People. In 1994 theUnited Nations General Assembly claimed 9 August as the international day to beobserved for the world's indigenous people.

Past injustice is still to be recognized forvictims and the healing of relationships. Reconciliation between indigenouspeoples and States is taking many forms and differs from country to country.

ENIL wants to highlight the situation for disabledindigenous people by asking the questions: Do these people receive the supportneeded? Are they accessing their human rights?

The situation of the Sámi people, the indigenouspeople of the northern part of Scandinavia, isone of concern. One of the main occupations for the Sámi is that of deerherding which has a highrisk rate for accidents. There is an average of three deaths per year amongSámi deer herders.[1]Stress and transport injuries are also high. If accidents causing death arehigh, the question arises as to how many deer herders are left with injuriesthat limit function and cause disability. And again the question - do thesevictims receive the support needed?

Accordingto the UN report - State of the World's Indigenous Peoples[2] indigenous peoples suffer from poorer health; they are more likely to experience disability and reduced quality of lifeand ultimately die younger than their non-indigenous counterparts. Indigenous peoples make up 5% of the world'spopulation, but some 15 % of the world's poor. ENILis aware of how the state of poverty contributes to the state of disability and devastating situations.

The vision behind the ‘Declaration on the Rights ofIndigenous Peoples' is that the situation of indigenous cultures, languages and ways of life under constant threatfrom climate change, armed conflict, lack of educational opportunities anddiscrimination is to be reversed.

ENIL welcomes statistics ondisabled indigenous people in order to be at rest that these groups are notlagging behind in the fight for human rights.
