			<title>Press Release: Indigenous People</title>
			<link>http://www.enil.eu/enil/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=518&amp;Itemid=82</link>
<description>ENIL &amp;ndash; The European Network on Independent Livingrespects the International Day of the World&amp;rsquo;s Indigenous People. In 1994 theUnited Nations General Assembly claimed 9 August as the international day to beobserved for the world&amp;rsquo;s indigenous people. Past injustice is still to be recognized forvictims and the healing of relationships. Reconciliation between indigenouspeoples and States is taking many forms and differs from country to country. ENIL wants to highlight the situation for disabledindigenous people by asking the questions: Do these people receive the supportneeded? Are they accessing their human rights? The situation of the S&amp;aacute;mi people, the indigenouspeople of the northern part of Scandinavia, isone of concern. One of the main occupations for the S&amp;aacute;mi is that of deerherding which has a highrisk rate for accidents. There is an average of three deaths per year amongS&amp;aacute;mi deer herders.[1]Stress and transport injuries are also high. If accidents causing death arehigh, the question arises as to how many deer herders are left with injuriesthat limit function and cause disability. And again the question - do thesevictims receive the support needed? Accordingto the UN report - State of the World&amp;rsquo;s Indigenous Peoples[2] indigenous peoples suffer from poorer health; they are more likely to experience disability and reduced quality of lifeand ultimately die younger than their non-indigenous counterparts. Indigenous peoples make up 5% of the world&amp;rsquo;spopulation, but some 15 % of the world&amp;rsquo;s poor. ENILis aware of how the state of poverty contributes to the state of disability and devastating situations. The vision behind the &amp;lsquo;Declaration on the Rights ofIndigenous Peoples&amp;rsquo; is that the situation of indigenous cultures, languages and ways of life under constant threatfrom climate change, armed conflict, lack of educational opportunities anddiscrimination is to be reversed. ENIL welcomes statistics ondisabled indigenous people in order to be at rest that these groups are notlagging behind in the fight for human rights. <title>Please Act Now! EDF General Assembly Feedback - read the Press Release at the bottom</title>

EDF General Assembly in Madrid

ENIL was present at the interesting and successful EDF
General Assembly in Madrid last week end. Results of the meeting included EDF
requesting its Members to act now on two main issues:

- The issues stated in the European
Disability Pact must be included in EU policies. Europe is now at an important
stage where the policies for the next 10 years are at stake. The Lisbon Treaty
has come to an end and the Council of Ministers is drawing up the 2020
strategy. This strategy will serve as the Treaty for the next 10 years and as
of now &amp;ldquo;disability&amp;rdquo; is not an issue.

Time is running out! We now urge
you, all ENIL members around EU, lobby and write to your responsible
ministers. The deadline is the 17th of June so please do what
you can now!

Read more in ENIL Press Release on
this subject and find the template of the letter here.

- Disabled people must not pay for
the financial crisis that has been caused by speculation! We disabled women and
men of all ages and our families are paying for the present financial crisis
with reduction in income, benefits and support to employment opportunities or
in cuts in support to our organizations.

We are calling on the European
Council, Commission and Parliament and other European institutions and all
the Governments of Europe to ensure that we people with disabilities and our
families do not continue to pay for the developing economic crisis.

See the Press Release that EDF has
sent out here.

			<title>Fundamental Rights Platform Meeting</title>
			<link>http://www.enil.eu/enil/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=457&amp;Itemid=82</link>
			<description>
ENIL attended the 3rd
Fundamental Rights Platform Meeting on the 15-16 of April, 2010 in Vienna - (The platform meeting is a method of communication between the
Fundamental Rights Agency and the EU civil society.)

ENIL &amp;ndash; European Network on Independent Living through
its director Jamie Bolling was represented as one of the 162 members attending
the meeting. On the agenda were discussions concerning poverty and social
exclusion and on the Lisbon
treaty as a tool for fundamental rights. The working plan for 2012 and the
Multi-Annual Framework for 2013-2017 were also main points allowing for
contributions from the Fundamental Rights Platform that represents the European
Union&amp;rsquo;s Civil Society. The meeting had also the role of collecting input
concerning reporting and running issues of the Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA).

What is the FRA and what is the FRA platform? FRA or
the Fundamental Rights Agency is a EU agency with the role to
provide relevant assistance and
expertise to institutions and authorities of the Community and its Member States
for the implementing of community law relating
to fundamental rights. This support for the different actors when they
take measures or formulate courses of action within their respective spheres of
competence is a way to make sure there is full respect for fundamental rights.

The Fundamental Rights Platform (FRP) is a method and
network for cooperation and information exchange between the FRA and EU civil
society. The platform is to act as the main channel for the FRA's cooperation
with civil society ensuring a dialogue and cooperation between the Agency and
relevant stakeholders. The FRA platform has an annual meeting.
