European Disability Forum (EDF) answers the Accessibility Act Consultation

March 29, 2012 under Accesibility, Human Rights, News

Over the past three months, the European Commission has run a public consultation on a European Accessibility Act. The Disabled People’s Rights unit within the Directorate-General for Justine, who are leading the consultation, explained that this process is part of the preparatory data collection that will underpin the impact assessment for the development of a European Accessibility Act (EAA). The objective of the EAA will be to improve the accessibility of goods and services in the European market.

It is important that the disabled people’s movement puts forward a vision that is representative of all disabled people to inform the development of such important legislation. A wide consultation has been set up for members of EDF and a final draft response has been discussed by the leaders of the disabled people’s movement during the EDF board meeting earlier this month.

For further information on this consultation and EDF‘s position in relation to the European Accessibility Act please visit their website here.

The EDF response to the European Accessibility Act consultation is also available to download from the EDF website (consultation_FINAL.doc)

Enil Promotes Edf’s Crisis Observatory

October 27, 2011 under News

As you know ENIL is very alarmed by the ongoing cuts and austerity measures throughout Europe that disproportionally hit people with disabilities. Among other actions we are working to get our ENIL proposal resolution through the European Parliament.

We also cooperate with other international NGO’s and organizations to fight the cuts. The European Disability Forum (EDF) has created an online tool on their website to gather and monitor all the negative measures taken by EU member states. Also cases of negative portrayal of people with disabilities can be reported.

ENIL CALLS ON ALL HER MEMBERS TO ACTIVELY USE THIS ONLINE SURVEY! If your government is decreasing your personal assistance hours or taking away your mobility allowance, or if your minister is portraying disabled people as lazy or if he is planning to stop paying for assistive technology, share this with the whole of Europe! The collected data will be made public and will be used to lobby for better policy. Info & links below.

The European Disability Forum (EDF) denounces that current economic, social and political policies adopted by member states and the EU increased the numbers of people experiencing social exclusion in Europe, and created an Observatory and a survey on the impact of the economic crisis on the rights of persons with disabilities.

The Economic crisis in the European Union is having devastating effects on the quality of our democracies, and on the economic and social structures that have been built in our societies over the last decades of economic growth. The European Union’s “Europe 2020” strategy has made social inclusion one of the three pillars bringingEuropeout the crisis. Nevertheless, the European Disability Forum (EDF) denounces that current economic, social and political policies adopted by Member States and the European Union increased the numbers of people experiencing social exclusion inEurope. EDF has created an Observatory on the impact of the economic crisis on the rights of persons with disabilities (http://www.edf-feph.org/Page_Generale.asp?DocID=13854&thebloc=13856) To:

  • Collect relevant national examples
  • To monitor austerity measures taken by EU member states, European Union institutions and International financial institutions.

EDF Freedom of Movement Campaign

June 2, 2011 under News

AREEDF Freedom of Movement Campaign Logo YOU FREE ENOUGH?

WE WANT FREEDOM MOVEMENT FOR ALL!

The European Union says it guarantees freedom of movement to all citizens but the reality is that disabled people across Europe face all sorts of barriers when travelling. Major difficulties arise not only when travelling by plane but also on the way to work, study and all the regular activities of every day life.

Overall the issue of accessibility is vital as it is essential for participation in society. The European Commission is working towards a European Disability Act that will set out a general framework for accessibility in terms of goods and services. This Act should be ready by 2012 and is contemplated as one of the key actions within the European Commission Disability Strategy 2010-2020.

With this campaign EDF wants the European Union to understand the true meaning and relevance of Freedom of Movement.

Visit EDF’s website for more information on the campaign in the link below
