Southern European Region of ENIL coordinator, CIL Sofia (Bulgaria)

January 31, 2012 under ENIL Staff, IL activists, IL ORGANIZATIONS, News, SRT

A Southern European Region of ENIL has been in existence since the beginning of 2012.The Region is coordinated by the Centre for Independent Living in Sofiaand personally overseen by Peter Kichashki. Although CIL Sofia  is well-known in the Region for promoting independent living, Peter is a relatively new face – a young, energetic and remarkably smart guy who won’t be held back from being part of a good cause by any barrier. Despite his youth he has a lot of experience in fighting discrimination through taking cases to the Bulgarian Anti-Discrimination Board. At the moment he is studying Law at theNewBulgarianUniversity.

Centre for Independent Living Sofia was set up in 1995 and since then has been mainly involved in political work to promote independent living. During its years of hard work, CIL Sofia has managed to assemble a network of friends and supporters to fight for a shared cause and make serious efforts to achieve  Independent Living aims inBulgaria. CIL Sofia has enjoyed a lot of media coverage and public attention: its media monitoring report for the past year shows more than 90 pages of media clippings and approximately 80% of the disability issues in public debate in Bulgaria are linked to CIL Sofia activities. Such attention helps widen CIL Sofia’s network yet further. These achievements have made CIL Sofia an organisation with strong public influence in its representation of the voice of Independent Living inBulgaria.

Unfortunately,Bulgariahas turned out to be a difficult place to embed IL policies in the mainstream –Bulgariais among the very few European countries, which have not ratified the UN CRPD yet. Government plans to have the ratification voted on in 2012. We believe that this will make a huge difference and will mark a turning point after which the Government will no longer be  able to practice its  old habits of ignoring the rights of disabled people.

Role model: Meet Peter Kichaski from Sofia (Bulgary)

January 31, 2012 under IL activists, Role Models, SRT

I was born in Vidin, Bulgaria in 1989. I graduated from the Natural Sciences and Maths high-school in the town and am now studying Law at New Bulgarian University Sofia. I’m an active fighter for the rights of persons with disabilities in Bulgaria. I’ve represented many cases before the Bulgarian Protection Against Discrimination Commission. These have mostly been in relation to accessibility and of course there were some larger cases which received a great deal of public attention. I’m involved in the CIL Sofia network and have been very active in events organised by the Centre. I have dealt with business for practically the of my whole life– I’m in the metal recycling industry. I’m engaged and I adore my whole family.

• What is your personal experience of disability?

I’m an active citizen and my impairment has never stopped me from doing whatever I want. Actually I look at it the way I look at my hair color – it is not that big of a deal it’s just something about me. Maybe this outlook is the product of a lot of effort – mine and my family’s. I’ve always had this impairment and I’ve always attended mainstream education: mainstream kindergarten, mainstream elementary school, mainstream high-school and mainstream university. This I owe to my parents who have never looked at me as different – for them I’m as normal as everybody else and this has shaped my positive outlook. I’ve been using different forms of personal assistance for the past 4 or 5 years now. Unfortunately in Bulgaria there is no satisfactory service provision and I’ve always paid my assistants from my own pocket, but this has made me the independent person I am now. ENIL Conference in the University of Valencia (Spain)

November 19, 2011 under IL activists, SRT

university-of-valenciaLast 18th  november 2011, there was a conference under the title “Independent Living, a Life Empowerment Strategy”, it took place in the Social Education Faculty of the Valencia University.

The speakers were the ENIL collaborators Katjia Villatoro, José Alfonso López and Juan Benages.

The conference sparked off big interest and the audience was implicated, beyond the academic interest. The issues treated were from the history of the independent living movement to the UN convention on the rights of people with disability. The final conclusión was that IL means equity, but at the same time it’s a viable economical model, a profitable driving force of social productivity, employment creation and socioeconomic growing. It provides a social investment system with a high rate of investment return for the public and private sector, as well gives everybody the opportunity  to choose his own way of living.

After that conference we had the opportunity to plan a future event for a full day duration workshop, under the idea of increasing the diffusion range of the IL philosophy.

The Cluster consists of specialized agents of the sector including Grupo ICAVI as technical adviser, with Laida San Sebastian in the lead. Other partners are for example companies for assistive technology (AT), personal assistance and supported employment, as well as research centers.

The purpose of the mission was to contribute to the possible economical and employment growth of the region of San Sebastian by promoting the AT sector particularly through innovation, internationalization and through the introduction of new products and services. Interest in supported employment and Independent Living was also expressed. For this purpose, a visit to Sweden was decided upon, being one of the most developed countries in the field of AT and in disability services.

Back to Italy after the Freedom Drive

October 20, 2011 under Freedom Drive, IL activists, News, SRT

On 15 September, the fifth edition of the Freedom Drive was held in Strasbourg. The Freedom Drive is a march for freedom organised every two years by ENIL, which this year saw over two hundred people with disabilities from 20 countries marching from Place de la Republic to the European Parliament.

The aim of the event is to ensure the right for people with disabilities to live independently, by adopting policies based on respect for human rights.  This can be made possible through developing accessible spaces, accessible transportation, assistive technology and self-managed personal assistance, as provided by Article  19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It would help us choose how to organise ours lives, just like everyone else.  Click here to read more.. »

What is Landsailing?

September 30, 2011 under News, SRT

A sailkart is a vehicle designed for leisure or sport, only moved by the force of the wind against a sail. It usually has three points of support on the floor where wheels or ice skates are set. Sail can be of fabric, rigid or semirigid. It is provided of a compartment for the driver from where he steers through pedals or a wheel and handles the sail through booms with tackles. To sum up, it works in a similar way than a sail boat, able to reach amazing speeds.

Landsailing is, above all, a sport as surprising, passionate and energetic as unknown, possible to do thanks to Eolic Energy. It is a lively and powerful sport and a surprising, appealing and an incredible sensation of freedom as well. It was wonderful I could live another pleasant experience of independence. A political agreement to promote any kind of adapted sport would be advisable, in order to make possible the spreading of the adapted sport.
