Briefing on the Effect of Austerity on Access to Independent Living in the EU

The European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) is holding a briefing for MEPs on the Effect of Austerity on Access to Independent Living in the EU. The briefing will take place in the European Parliament on 26 September (16:30 – 18:30) and will be hosted by MEP Marek Plura (EPP).

Since 2011, ENIL has been monitoring and raising awareness about the effect of austerity measures on the rights of disabled people. With the Alliance Against Disability Cuts, we have been lobbying for an EP Resolution against the Cuts, but have not received enough support. We are determined to continue this work, as the cuts have continued disproportionately affecting disabled people’s services and benefits – with devastating consequences in some cases.

The 2017 Freedom Drive, which takes place from 24 – 28 September, is an excellent opportunity to hold this briefing, as many of our members will be in Brussels. This briefing will give MEPs an opportunity to hear first hand from disabled activists about how they have been affected by the cuts.

Due to the limited size of the room (max. 30 participants), participation is by invitation only. ENIL will, however, look into the possibility of webstreaming the briefing.
