How Are You Promoting Independent Living On 5th May?

A bit more than one month remains until 5th May. The 3rd European Independent Living Day is approaching quickly, and even though in many countries it is a public holiday (Ascension of Jesus), a lot of ENIL’s friends and supporters from across Europe plan to be Proud, Strong and Visible on this day and raise awareness on Independent Living.

In some countries organizations, or individuals, have already planned what they will do and the variety of the actions is amazing. For example, in France Association Gré à Gré is going to promote the translation of the Independent Living Myth Buster translated in French. In Croatia the Association of Disabled Persons of Karlovac County is conducting a project aiming to increase the employment of disabled people in the area of Karlovac by introducing it through a photo display. After the success on 5th May 2015, Onafhankelijk Leven, Belgium (Flanders), will hold again an event called “Meet a (disabled) stranger” where a tent is placed in a public place and people are invited to enter and have a chat with a disabled person who lives in the community. STIL from Sweden and ULOBA from Norway plan online campaigns, while in Portugal, Centro de Vida Independente will have a conference in Lisbon. In Slovakia TENENET is doing a big open air action (with a famous national singer and national media) to encourage young disabled people to start a job (in the open labour market) or to create their own job (social entrepreneurship). In Belarus the Office for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is going to present the Zero report on the life situation of disabled people, while AYDM from Montenegro is implementing the “Freedom of choice” project, related to promotion of the Independent Living philosophy. A street event at one of the biggest squares in Podgorica is going to take place. Finally, in Serbia, the CIL Serbia (a network of nine local CILs) is planning to gather its colleagues and partners on 5th May in Belgrade and mark the 20th anniversary of its work by having several activities.

These are only some of the activities planned for 5th May. Many other organizations are still finalizing their plans and will soon announce them. What about you? Let’s celebrate the European Independent Living Day together! You can read what happened last year and find some great ideas here.
