Petitions Committee Investigates Slovakia

The European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) wrote a report for the Petitions Committee (PETI Committee) at the European Parliament on the use of European Structural and Investment Funds in Slovakia. The report was used by a delegation of MEPs, led by Cecilia Wikstrom, who visited Slovakia last week to investigate the use of Structural Funds for the building and renovation of institutions for disabled people.

Slovakia is being investigated by the PETI Committee as a result of a petition by the Open Society Foundations – Mental Health Initiative on the misuse of Structural Funds in Central and Eastern Europe for institutionalisation of disabled people. The petition, submitted in 2009, was supported by ENIL – ECCL.

This recently published report will be followed by a longer report, which will be discussed by the PETI Committee in November. ENIL is thankful to our partners in Slovakia – Maria Machajdikova from the SOCIA Foundation and Miroslav Cangar from the Community Services Support Centre/Social Work Advisory Board, for their input and advice during the writing of the report.
