My name is Gina Mc Namara from Galway in the West of Ireland. I am a person with a visual impairment since birth. I have Congenital Glaucoma which means I am completely blind in one eye, with partial sight in the other.I have not let my disability stand in the way of living independently.
I completed my Honours Degree in Social Care from 2003 – 2007. During this course, I completed a series of work placements which mainly involved working with people with disabilities. After my degree I took a year out to do some voluntary work in order to explore the most suitabe career that I would be happy with and have a passion for.
During this year I discovered the area of advocacy for people with disabilities which simply means speaking up for yourself and others. This led me on to pursue my Masters in Public Advocacy and Activism in NUI Galway from 2008 – 2009.
During the masters I completed my own research in the area of advocacy for people with learning disabilities specifically from an international level to a national level.
I strongly believe in the Independent Living Movement for all people with disabilities as we all want to live independent lives the same as people without a disability.
