As we say goodbye to another year, I write to thank you for your cooperation and with an appeal for your continued support in the coming year.
It has been a difficult year for the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL), with the sudden loss of our dear colleagues and friends Peter Lambreghts, Martin Naughton and Debbie Jolly. We have had to regroup, but are making sure we are as strong as ever, so that we can continue the work our friends felt so passionately about.
We have started preparing for the ENIL Freedom Drive 2017, with the theme ‘A Voice for All’. We want to make sure no one gets left behind in the struggle for Independent Living, be it disabled children, people living in institutions, older people, or those isolated in their own homes. Independent Living is for everyone – this must be understood.
We will be stepping up our work against disability hate crime, by advocating for legal and policy changes across Europe, and building the capacity of disabled people to stand up to hate crime. We will continue being active in the European Expert Group on the Transition from Institutional to Community-based Care, by providing expertise to the European Commission, Member States and other organisations on how to develop alternatives to institutional care that facilitate Independent Living – making sure they do not place disabled people into smaller institutions. We will be travelling to Belarus, to support local disabled people’s organisations, and our Youth Network will continue empowering young disabled people to advance disability rights in their own communities and countries.
If you wish to support our work in 2017, please consider making a donation. Your support will help us do more – on disability hate crime, deinstitutionalisation, monitoring how EU funding is used, working with disabled people outside EU and with young disabled people. Together, our voice can be stronger.
