The European Network on Independent Living (ENIL), is inviting you to an online seminar to introduce you to the most empowering approach to disability policy there is, the Independent Living philosophy.
The online seminar will take place on the 10th of December – the International Human Rights Day – from 15:00 to 17:00. You can register here.
Independent Living means that disabled people have self-determination, self-representation, choices, rights and opportunities on a level equal with others. Any form of segregation or discrimination is irreconcilable with the right to Independent Living. As disabled people, we demand an end to policy solutions imposed by others, without our meaningful participation. ENIL has been working since 1989 to make Independent Living an inalienable right for all disabled people.
With the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities (UN CRPD), the EU and all its Member States agreed to implement the right to Independent Living, set out in Article 19 supported by general comment and the guidelines on DI .
What does this mean in practice?
Our online seminar will introduce you to Independent Living and how it is addressed by EU Disability Policy. We will specifically talk about Deinstitutionalisation, the Freedom of Movement, Global Action, Employment and Access to Housing. Our experts, the majority disabled people themselves, will present to you key barriers faced by disabled people in Europe and actions that should be taken by the EU institutions. There will be testimonies by disabled people who have been affected by such barriers.
We are hoping you are engaged to support IL and see you soon!
