StratAGEic: The Power of Strategic Litigation to Tackle Discrimination in Old Age is a European project that aims to strengthen the capacity of civil society organisations to use strategic litigation to address discrimination against older persons and promote the effective implementation of fundamental rights.

Although ageism is one of the most widespread forms of discrimination in Europe, relatively few legal cases have addressed violations of the rights of older people. Many organisations representing older persons have not yet explored the potential of strategic litigation as a tool to drive legal and social change. StratAGEic responds to this gap by supporting civil society organisations in developing the knowledge, skills and cooperation needed to use legal action more effectively to defend fundamental rights.

The project is coordinated by AGE Platform Europe and brings together partners from several European countries:

· AGE Platform Europe (Belgium) – Project coordinator

· European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) (Belgium)

· Fundacja na Rzecz Seniorów BONUM VITAE (Poland)

· Cyprus Third Age Observatory (CTAO) (Cyprus)

· People Behind (Greece)

· APRe! – Associação de Aposentados, Pensionistas e Reformados (Portugal)

ENIL contributes its experience in strategic litigation and the use of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, drawing on its work promoting disability rights and independent living across Europe. Within the project, ENIL supports knowledge-sharing and training activities, contributes to the development of practical resources on strategic litigation, and helps connect different social justice movements by highlighting the links between ageing, disability and other forms of discrimination.

StratAGEic combines research, training and peer learning activities to strengthen the capacity of organisations working on the rights of older people. Key activities include:

· Mapping and research on age discrimination and legal frameworks

· Training sessions on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and strategic litigation

· Peer learning and mentoring activities

· Study visits and exchanges of good practices

· The development of guidelines and online learning resources on strategic litigation.

The project also looks at the intersectional dimensions of discrimination, including the links between ageing, disability, gender and LGBTQI+ identities, promoting a life-course approach to human rights.

StratAGEic runs from October 2025 to September 2027 and is funded by the European Union’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme.
