Reclaim your rights! Come to the Freedom Drive 2024. Illustration of someone speaking in a megaphone

The movement of disabled people in favour of self-determined living extends far beyond Belgium. The European Network on Independent Living has existed since 1989. We regularly organise the Freedom Drive, where people with disabilities from all over Europe and beyond come together in Brussels to stand up for their rights.

Under the motto “Reclaim your rights”, workshops, a conference, a hearing in the European Parliament and a protest march through the European Quarter will take place in Brussels from 23 to 25 September.

The workshops, conference and hearing will give you the opportunity to meet decision-makers from the European Commission, the European Parliament and national governments to voice your concerns. What barriers prevent disabled people from equal participation? What solutions do you see? Do you know of any good examples that can be built on? Critical questions and contributions from the participants are very welcome.

At the same time, we will discuss key aspects of groundbreaking topics: How does supported decision-making work in practice? What strategies can we use to expand access to personal assistance? How can we promote social change through civil disobedience?

The highlight of the Freedom Drive is always the protest march through the European quarter. We loudly proclaim what needs to change in current disability policy. At a meeting with the EU Commissioner for Equality, we will present political demands. The protest will end with a rally in front of the European Parliament.

Anyone who wants to contribute creatively can do so. In preparation for the protest, there will be a workshop on creating banners. The artist Ramon Moreno Cases and the activist Clementine Doevendans will guide you competently.
