On October 18, 2024, the European Network on Independent Living (ENIL) participated in the European Confederation of Youth Clubs’ conference titled “Challenge, Change, Opportunity: Rethinking Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Open Youth Work” in Ghent, Belgium. The event brought together youth workers, policymakers, and civil society groups to share knowledge and collaborate on shaping a fairer, more inclusive future for Europe’s youth.
Representing ENIL, intern Francesca Spanghero presented on “Challenges Faced by Young Disabled People in Europe and Ways to Achieve Change.” Her presentation addressed key issues such as barriers to deinstitutionalization, limited access to education, challenges in securing employment and workplace inclusion, and obstacles to independent living, such as housing shortages. She emphasized that these barriers, alongside marginalization, isolation, and ableism, can significantly impact the mental health and well-being of disabled people. Francesca noted how these challenges are compounded by the uncertainty and anxiety already prevalent among millennials and Gen Z.
The conference featured plenary sessions and workshops, focusing on practical strategies for embedding diversity and equity in youth work. Discussions centered on breaking down structural barriers and fostering participation from marginalized groups.
Reflecting on the event, Francesca shared:
“This conference emphasized the importance of addressing systemic barriers faced by disabled youth and ensuring their voices are central in policymaking. It was inspiring to connect with others working toward greater inclusion.”
ENIL remains committed to advocating for disabled youth, supporting their inclusion in all aspects of life, and fostering collaboration across Europe.
