By Fionn Crombie Angus – ENIL Youth Board Member

I enjoyed my two days last week of meetings in Brussels, supporting the EDF Youth Committee as representative from the ENIL Youth Board.

The first day we got together with young (18 to 25 year old) advocates with disabilities from Italy, France, and Latvia, working together to create an awareness campaign to address issues of concern to them. As I have worked on numerous such campaigns already, both during my ESC volunteering for ENIL and on projects here in Ireland, I was able to offer practical support.

The second day was the final meeting of the four-year cycle of the current EDF Youth Committee. Much of the work was spent fine-tuning the final draft of a set of recommendations from Young People who advocate for Disability Rights in Europe. At the end, there was a graduation ceremony for the committee members who spent the last four years working on a multitude of projects. ENIL’s own Nina Portolan was honoured in absentia.

I’ve put my name forward to be ENIL’s representative on the next EDF Youth Committee. Although my 30th birthday is tomorrow, I have been assured that an exception to the age restriction is often made for people with intellectual disability, like myself. I certainly still feel youthful, and, if I’m chosen to serve, I believe I can do a good job at it.
